Artist Profile
Ruth Williams grew up in the Peak District National Park of north Derbyshire, where she loved to wander over the bleak moorland, dropping down into picturesque river valleys.
She gained a B.Sc(Hons) in Chemistry and Mathematics at Bristol University; then her desire to travel led her to Uganda with the British Ministry of Overseas Development. She spent a year at Makerere University, Kampala, gaining a Graduate Diploma of Education. In that time she enjoyed doing batik, tie-dying and ceramics; after climbing Mt Kenya, through its amazing vegetation and up to the permanent snowfields, she felt inspired to acquire some oil paints and began her enjoyment of painting.
She taught in girls’ boarding schools in Uganda, and met her Australian husband in North Kenya; they now live in the Shellharbour area. As a part-time TAFE teacher, Ruth managed to slot in a TAFE certificate of Fine Arts, which included print-making, photography, sculpture and painting.
Now in her late seventies, Ruth recently joined the Shellharbour City Art Society. She loves the encouragement and enthusiasm of all the members. She now paints in acrylics, inspired by God’s beautiful creation of the local area and beyond.
