JENINE BAILEY

Artist Profile

Jenine Bailey has always had a passion for art and design and is now a practising artist in the Illawarra. After retiring from teaching, Jenine completed a Diploma of Fine Arts (Distinction) at West Wollongong TAFE in 2013. During this time, she was drawn to printmaking, inspired by the element of surprise inherent in the process, when the first proof is taken from the plate.

Her work has been exhibited at Wollongong Art Gallery and has been selected for a print exchange conducted by Queenscliff Gallery and Workshop, Victoria, for a number of years. Jenine as a member of the Southern Highlands Printmakers, has exhibited in Bowral District Art Gallery, Sturt Gallery- Mittagong, New England Regional Art Museum, Gallery Lane Cove, Basil Sellers Gallery- Moruya and Ngununggula Regional Gallery. One of the highlights for Jenine’s art journey has been exhibiting at Ngununggula with the Southern Highlands Printmakers and the Many Hands Artists from Alice Springs, who are the direct decedents of Albert Namatjira. Namatjira’s work was included in the exhibition.

Jenine draws her inspiration from the Australian landscape. Living in the Shellharbour area opens up many opportunities for exploration; from the beachside to rainforests, bushlands and rural settings.

As a dedicated printmaker, Jenine’s focus is on intaglio and relief printing. Her intaglio prints are created by layering intricate marks, enhanced by tone through aquatinting. The gradual etching of an aquatinted image gives depth and moodiness.

While her lino printing or relief printing involve many weeks of carving the lino to create an intricately detailed image. Jenine continues to develop her knowledge and style by attending Duckprint Fine Art Limited Editions in Port Kembla under the guidance of master printer, Tom Goulder. She has also attended workshops run by Rew Hanks (2016), Seraphina Martin (2016), Dianne Fogwell (2018), Basil Hall and David Frazer (2017 in Skopelos, Greece).
