Joan Rodgers

Artist Profile

Joan Rodgers

Joan Rodgers is an artist living in Albion Park. She had a 45-year career as an economist teaching and conducting research at universities in New Zealand and the USA as well as in Australia. Her artistic activities began after she retired although she had enjoyed drawing and painting as a child and young adult.

Joan has no formal art education but has taken several on-line courses. The most influential on her development are those by Australian water colour artist, Jane Blundell, and more recently by Ian Roberts, an American oil painter. She exhibited for the first time in 2025, and was delighted that two of her paintings were sold.

Her principal medium is watercolour but she also strives to improve her proficiency in oils and pastels. She enjoys painting Plein Air as well as in the studio. She regards drawing as an important skill, both in itself and as a complement to painting. To this end she regularly attends life drawing sessions.

Joan is a member of the Kiama Art Society and the Illawarra branch of Urban Sketchers, as well as Shellharbour City Art Society.
