Geoff Smith

Artist Profile

Geoff is an Australian photographer who loves producing images of beautifully lit landscapes as wall art. He has a particular love of monochrome, with an emphasis on line, tone and texture, including the unique rendering provided by infrared capture.

Geoff began his love of photography as a teenager, under the guidance of his father, a keen photographer and landscape painter. Many hours were spent in the darkroom, producing black & white prints, and also in reviewing the merits of piles of colour transparencies. Geoff has continued
his informal education in photography for more than 40 years, consuming books, magazines, online content and workshops.

He has been a member of a number of camera clubs and informal collectives of photographers, and was a past member of the Blackheath Art Society when he lived in
the Blue Mountains. He is a member of Shellharbour City Arts Society.

Geoff particularly enjoys capturing what nature has to offer, responding to the way light falls on landscapes, and seeking to portray this in beautiful images. He is also drawn to the unique perspective of aerial landscapes. His motto is: “It’s not just about the subject, it’s about the light falling on the subject!”
Geoff has participated in a number of group exhibitions in the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains. His first solo exhibition ‘Shoreline’ at Project Contemporary Art Space in 2010 was a collection of monochrome images of life along the ocean shore. After moving to the Blue Mountains, Geoff’s next solo exhibition titled ‘Mono Blue’ was held at the World Heritage Centre in the Blue Mountains National Park in 2013, and was an exploration of Blue Mountains landscapes in monochrome.

This was followed by ‘Blue Vision’ in 2016, a collection of mainly colour landscapes, in collaboration with another Blue Mountains based photographer. In 2011 Geoff was an exhibited finalist in the NSW Parliamentary Plein Air Photography Award.
