Bernadette Harrigan

Artist Profile

Without formal qualifications in the visual arts, apart from the occasional workshop such as a portrait workshop in the Julian Ashton Summer School, Bernadette is primarily self taught though scours internet sources for ideas and techniques which stimulate her thirst for self development.

Peter Bates, an Illawarra art teacher, guided her early adult discovery at weekly classes.
Bernadette was a finalist in the 2017 National Gallipoli Art Competition.

Artist Statement. “I have long used my art to manage intense emotions hence my many social justice commentary works. Quickly getting bored, the ‘difficult’ subjects allow a meditative process to develop and I can then remain focused. Given my preferred subject matter I see the majority of my social justice work as ‘unsellable’.

I work in a variety of mediums including watercolour and acrylics.

I like experimenting and have meandered from landscapes and seascapes to portraits.

I have a deep love of art nouveau and art deco styles and am now seeking to both find contemporary expressions of these.
